Aguas Frescas

Hello friends!

One of my favorite things in the summertime is cool (fruit) water, or in Spanish we call it aguas frescas. Though it is a common thing to have year-round, I personally tend to crave them so much more in the summer.

My favorite one is watermelon but in Mexico or Mexican restaurants you may find cantaloupe, guava, mango, orange, papaya, passion fruit, cucumber, pineapple, tamarind, hibiscus tea, and many more.

You can also add vegetables if you want to make it more of a green juice or add some chia seeds.

What’s great about aguas frescas is that they are also super easy to make! Below are a few of my favorite recipes:

  • 8 cups cubed seeded watermelon, (about 6 pounds with the rind), divided
  • 1 cup water, divided
  • ⅓ cup sugar, divided
  • ¼ cup fresh lime juice
  • 1 liter (4 cups) club soda, or seltzer water, well chilled
  • Lime slices, for garnish

Combine half the watermelon, half the water and half the sugar in a blender; puree. Pour through a coarse strainer into a large container. Repeat with the remaining watermelon, water and sugar. Stir in lime juice. Refrigerate until well chilled, about 4 hours. Enjoy!

  • 1 ripe mango, peeled, pitted and cut into chunks
  • 1 1/2 cups cold water
  • 1/2 teaspoon freshly squeezed lime juice
  • 1/2 teaspoon agave nectar or honey, more or less to taste

In a blender, combine mango and water and blend until smooth. Pour through a strainer into ice-filled glasses. Stir in lime juice and agave. Garnish with lime and mint if you’d like, and serve.

  • 4 1/2 cups coarsely chopped seeded peeled cucumbers (about 4 medium)
  • 4 cups cold water
  • 2 cups ice cubes
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 2/3 cup fresh lime juice
  • 2 large pinches of salt
  • Additional ice cubes

Combine 2 1/4 cups chopped cucumbers, 2 cups water, 1 cup ice cubes, 1/2 cup sugar, 1/3 cup lime juice, and 1 pinch of salt in blender. Blend until sugar dissolves and mixture is smooth but slushy, about 2 minutes. Transfer mixture to pitcher. Repeat with remaining chopped cucumbers, 2 cups water, 1 cup ice cubes, sugar, lime juice, and salt.

I hope you all try and enjoy at the beach, by the pool, at your backyard, or while watching Netflix. No matter how or with whom you enjoy it with, it’ll definitely be a great summer treat!
